About Our Instructors

Michael Wizer, PhD
Dr. Wizer is a health psychologist and mindfulness meditation teacher for many years. He first learned how to meditate in 1974 from Zen Master, Philip Kapleau Roshi and later studied with many meditation masters: Soen sa Nim, Achan Cha, Gowenka, Jack Kornfield, and Joseph Goldstein.
Dr. Wizer studied comparative religion under Huston Smith at Syracuse University. As a doctoral student, the subject of his dissertation was the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn at the the Stress Management and Relaxation program at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.
Dr. Wizer first began teaching meditation at his local Mennonite church in 1980 and then a few years later started a meditation group at his home. Throughout his career as a health psychologist he has taught mindfulness meditation to psychology clients; cancer, heart disease, chronic pain, and pulmonary disease patients; young adults, physicians, psychologist, social workers, counselors, and the general public. He is the former director of the Dean Ornish Program for Reversing Heart Disease at Mercy Franciscan Hospital, and is presently a clinical psychologist with BridgePointe Psychological and Counseling Services.
